iPhone 3G Screen Replacement

Azraf Hipni

Salam n hi all..

I dropped my iPhone 3G some time ago. It looked horrible. It was like watching your favourite soccer team lose to a lousy,low-class,underage kids. I could stand no more, and decided to send it for repair. Since I am now in Malaysia, the first place i usually go for great bargain is forum.lowyat.net. I asked a forumer, who happened to be quite famous with this iPhone repair thing, and he quoted me RM 350, for a DIY screen + digitizer + LCD replacement. The price was cheap, but being Azraf Hipni, i wanted something even cheaper. FYI, im a cheap guy. haha.

Browsed montreal craigslist, the cheapest iphone LCD i can get was CAD 89. Multiply that by 3.3 plus minus. And dont forget to add 15% on top of the price ( stupid GST n PST ). Bodo btol. Sebaek Malaysia takde this ST-- ST thing. bodo bodo. Lowyat gave me a better deal, so i decided to repair my phone here ( Malaysia ). I went to KL during the weekend ( to meet my loves one + buy the RM350-LCD ), but changed my mind when i peeked at my bank balance. Did some more research on the net, and tadaaaaa, ive found a better way to replace my iphone cracked screen. heh~

The above video is only for iPhone 3G n 3Gs ( not confirmed ). It's not for iPhone 2G. And this is only the first video out of 5 parts. Look for the other 4 in Getterscott's Channel. This video helped me a lot. It cost me around RM 80 to get everything done. I saved RM 270. that is a lot amount of money ( for a poor guy like me ). I bought the screen + digitizer from HERE. Bought UHU glue at KLCC's Kinokuniya ( pardon me if i spelt it wrongly ), and a set of small screwdriver from Mydin... For RM 2.90. hahaha. When will you come to Miri , owh Mydin ku!

Important...
  1. If you wanna buy a screen replacement, make sure it includes the digitizer! some ebay seller posted only the screen without the digitizer. You cant buy it separately, it must be attached to one another.
  2. The 2 guys in the video used hair dryer in order to melt the glue under the cracked screen. I replaced my screen without using a hair dryer. My point, it can be done without a hair dryer if you use something inside your head called "the Brain".
  3. I used UHU GLUE to stick the screen on top of the inner body of my iPhone. In the video, they use a special type of pre-cut double faced tape. I browse for it in the net, it cost around USD 5 ( shipping not included ) - which equals to RM 20 plus minus. I opted to uhu glue, which i proudly bought in KLCC's Kinokuniya. I don't recommend Super Glue aka Gam Gajah. It is just too strong, and its hard to do some cleaning, say u applied to much glue.
  4. U need to be patient. You have to spare at least an hour of your total lifespan for this to be done, successfully.
Applied a mirror screen protector on top of the new screen. Cost me US 1.49 for 3 film covers. That was super cheap! My brother bought one for RM 20. gile babi cekik darah. Bisnes2 pun beragak la sket! You can get it HERE. Pegi mampos la org carik untung gile2 lancau ni.

Skype on iPhone 2G,3G and ipod touch 2G...

Azraf Hipni

Salam...

One new ( not that new thou ) feature added to the iPhone is Skype. Its first debut was last tuesday, and everyone was so eager for it. Japanese are the luckiest ones to test the application first hand. Some countries, such as Canada and some parts of europe had disable skype and doesn't even include it on the iTunes. There's always a way to bypass this, such as jailbreak your iPhone. But those people who created skype are not stupid, they have some sort of system which detects a Jailbroken or a non-JB iPhone. The first week went badly, where most of the JB community had problem with skype. Me included. But now, eveything is ok, thanks to the Saurik ( Cydia's inventor ) and others who contributed to overcome the problem.

So, some eye candy. heh~

this is my Home screen aka Springboard. You can see the blue S icon. Skype icon. yehuwww!

The splash screen. Cute thou!

Sign in screen!
Some people had problem to login. The app crashes once they start to type. This happens on JB iphone with modified keyboard tap sound.

This is my test account. So there's not contact in it. And the person online is my real account.

Did a test call, and voila! it works perfectly. No lag whatsoever.

Im not an avid user of skype, but since the community is growing, i might as well dump my other voip services and opt to skype in 1 or 2 years time. The quality is superb! i don't need thiose voicemail crap. One can always leave message thru text messaging. Voicemail can sometimes be choppy, and you've to pay everytim you want to retrieve it. As for Text Message, those who sent paid for it, and you can read it as many time as possible for free. So that's all for skype on iPhone. I never tried it on iPod touch 2nd G yet, but i assure you, it works fine, as long as you earphone has a built in microphone, and you're good to go.

Torrent - again~

Azraf Hipni

,

Salam..

haiyaaaaaaaaaa. It's unavoidable...... Torrent is still the best way to download stuff, and as previously mentioned in my post, my internet connection will be disconnected once the admin knows im using a torrent client to download stuff. Happened to me twice/thrice, and the whole building have to suffer for no internet. And me, an irresponsible guy, haha, slept over at my friends house, and use his internet instead. hahaha~ evil.

I wrote about Torrelay last time, and now, the site is down. Maybe it's a prank, or there are too many users, i don't know. So i have to get a way around in order to download from torrent. I somehow need to "cheat" the admin ( whoever he is ! ) or the bot into thinking that im "direct downloading" instead of "downloading from torrent". In this post, im going to teach you guys a new way, and it only works on Mozilla Firefox.

Go HERE. Register and log in. I don't need to teach the registration part, it's similar to other registration procedure. Username, email, password, random letter all that stuff. Once you log in, hit the link that suit your pc ( either it's a windows/osx/ linux ). A new windows will come out, and after 3 seconds, you can install the addons/plugins. It is recommended that you start you internet browser.

From here on, go to mininova.org, or any other torrent file website, search for the file you wanted to download, and it's done. It does has the resume capability, but it is only available if you didn't switch off you pc. Enjoy~

Google

Azraf Hipni

,

Salam everyone...

I would like to elaborate something about Google. What is this thing called Google? Most people know Google as a search engine. But, i prefer Yahoo! more than Google though~ haha~ I just realized it quite recently, that google is more than a search engine! I bet you've heard about gmail? I do have a gmail account, but i prefer my hotmail account more. hahaha~ So in this post, I'm going to say something else about google, which you guys out there might not evenknow that these services ever existed.

Calender..

Like many other organizer, google calender is not much a different. The only thing i like about google calender is that, i can sync it with my iPhone. It's kinda hectic to write/type on an iPhone , especially long sentences( iPhone users know what i mean by that! ). So, everytime i had something on my mind, i will write in on my google calender, and it will immediately update itself on my iphone calender application! I can even set the time and reminder from Google Calender and when the time comes, my iPhone will buzz me about it. It's kinda hard to explain it by words, you need to experience is first hand to get the actual idea.

This feature is not only available on the iPhone, but also on Windows Mobile handphone and also on the Blackberry. Hit this LINK for more details.

Contacts..

I'm so in love with my iPhone ( who is sick right now.. sobsob ). Everytime there's a new firmware update, i'll be among the last person to update my phone, though i'm among the first to know that the update is around. This is because, if i do update my iPhone, there's a 50 - 50 percent chance that it might be locked forever. I'll only update my iphone once the unlocking software is out ( a week late? ). And once i update and jailbreak it, it will sort of reformat my iPhone, and i need to sync it with itunes in order to restore my contacts, email, music blablabla ---- which takes houuuuuuuuuurssss to finish ( exaggerate of course! ).

Because of this hassle, i opted to Gmail Contacts. There are a lot of options in Gmail Contacts. Phone numbers ( work, home, etc ), email addresses, Home addresses, First name, Last name etc. It's so convenient, and very easy to use. Once every field is field up, i'll just sync it with my iPhone, and in a blink of an eye, all my contacts will be updated on my newly, reformatted iPhone.

Documents...

I have Microsoft Office 2007 on my laptop. Last week, I wrote a letter, an official letter to someone, and send it by email. I got a reply, saying that, the recipient can't open the letter document, followed by a message "Please downgrade your Word program". What i do is that, I copied my previous letter, and paste in on Google Document, and save it in .pdf format ( everyone uses pdf nowadays! and it is compatible with any pc. No need to upgrade downgrade blablabla ). And sent it back to the respective person. She received it with a thanks. ( i guess , she prefered .pdf any than many other format~ )

Google Document comes in 4 options, Document ( Words ), Presentation ( Powerpoint ), Form ( ??? ) and also Spreadsheet ( Excel ). You don't need to spend your precious money on Microsoft Office ( which is so pricey! ) and save a gig or more on your hard drive. You might say, "i can get free office from Sun Microsystem", but it's up to you. No hard feeling. You can also save your file online, and access it on any computers at some other part of the world, without having to bring your storage device around.

It's kinda weird huh? Having a 32 GB thumbdrive, just to save some 103kB word documents. and some cheesy pictures of you and you friends. hurm? Ok guys. That's all for now. Chiao!

Torrent , the sequel.

Azraf Hipni

Haha... I've just discovered another better way to download torrent.

My Problem...

I live in a apartment , single apartment ( or... cheap studio ).. everything is included in my rent. Utilities, water, Hot water, heating et cetera, including internet. It's kiinda fast though, like 10mbps. The only thing is that, it will get disconneted everytime i tried to torrent. I happened twice/thrice/countless times, and everyone inside the building cant get internet access because of me. :P . It's such an inconvenience. Once it happened, I usually run away to my friend's place.. How irresponsible. hehe!

My solution..

Torrent had always be the best method to download things, as it has more users + more uploaded files + more options + more VIRUS/TROJANS. haha. But, that's what an antivirus is for right? I surfed the net and end up at this website ...... http://www.torrelay.com. What does it do? It download the file through torrent to their server, and you can just direct download it once it's done.. If you're using the paid version, you can still download even when you're pc is turned off. You get the idea? It is as if you're asking your friend to download a file while you're at school. When school is over, you go to his place and just transfer the file from his pc to your external storage device ( i hope you understand what im trying to say. I'm bad at explaining stuff.)

How to do it?

  1. Go to the website mentioned above. hit "Launch",located at the top of the page. Then click "Add files" or "Add torrent". ( I'm writing this based on what i remembered. There might be a slight differences )
  2. Go to your favourite torrent website. I prefer mininova.org.
  3. Search for the stuff you want to download.
  4. Right click the "download button" and select "open as new tab". ( in Firefox. Boo safari.. boo ie. boo Opera. )
  5. A new tab will open, and a download windows will popped up. Close the download windows.
  6. Copy the URL in the new tab, paste it in the URL box in the torrelay website. Press enter.
  7. A list of file will come out. Download the file you're looking for.
  8. Let it download. If you're using the free version, do not close your internet browser.
  9. Once it's done, download it directly from the website. And that's it

The Pros..

  1. No need to install a torrent client.
  2. Save electricity bill ( haha ) as you can download while your pc is off ( paid version )
  3. Downloading from their server is superfast. I get a max speed of 1mbps ( usually I got like 100 kbps to 200 kbps on torrent. Back in Malaysia, it was 20kbps - 50 kbps.. it almost 20 times faster!! )

The Cons..

  1. Server is always full ( for free version )
  2. Limit of 800mb ( for free version )
  3. Need to download "twice" ( first, from the torrent seeders to the server and second, from the server to your pc ).
  4. Have to paid in order to get the full service.

Ok. i want to take my shower.. hahaha...

Youtube

Azraf Hipni

Have you ever heard of a site called youtube.com? No? Well......... are you on your first PC? huahauhau.. Youtube is a site where you can upload, watch and comment videos. You can sign in as member, have your own videos, and your own fans. Ask people to subscribe your page, and in 10 years time, you'll become famous. In case you're planning to do so, please.... i repeat, please don't post stupid videos... Post something useful.. eg -game walkthrough, speeches of respected people, historical events, etc2... Not video of you and your friends mimicking Britney's voice, or video of you and your gang hitting a dumb, fat kid..... You're wasting their bandwidth.. If you still want to upload that kind of videos, head to youku, or dailymotion, or R**tube. Those sites have high ratings too. huahauhaua..

Here, I'm going to teach you how to download videos from youtube, and also how to download audio from youtube. Owh ya, before you download anything, make sure you've done your homework, your daily routine, pray etc... as the thing that you're going to read has the same side effect of smoking bong. Addictive!

Downloading video...

  1. - easyyyyyy... search for the video you're interested in.
  2. - copy it's link ( in the address bar... eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOp8vQ0q8vM&feature=featured )
  3. - head to www.keepvid.com
  4. - paste your video's link in the space provided.
  5. - Hit download.
  6. - You'll see 2 "download" links, written in green. High and low quality. Right click on either one, select "save link as", and tadaaaaa...
  7. - you're good to go. You can transfer the video into your iPod, and even your cheap Made in China iPod.

Downloading audio..

  1. - Search for the video, copy the link.
  2. - head to http://www.flv2mp3.com/
  3. - paste the link into the provided space, and hit ok ( read the term and condition if you've nothing better to do )
  4. - wait a minute or so, the site is converting the video into .mp3 format.
  5. - the download windows will pop up, and download the file.
  6. - done.
I prefer this way as i don't need to download softwares and install them into my PC. Plus, they did all the necessary stuff for you ( as in converting the format, quality control etc ), so you can save a lot of time . The only cons that I is that, you have to do it one by one, and not in batches. But,who cares anyway. It's not that you're going to download 100 videos/music at once, unless it's "that" video. haha~ Ok. Stay tune. Hit the sponsor! heh~

Torrent....

Azraf Hipni

Torrent has been lying for quite sometime already, but there are still people who, despite "faceboo"ing almost 24/7, they still dunno how to torrent/what torrent are.. In this post, i'll teach you how to torrent/how to get torrent working. And ya, this is only for PC. I'm a PC guy. haha~ I'll not write a tutorial on a MAC unless i got one ( or i get to install OSX 10.5.1 on my laptop )

Important Notes...

  1. - Some files are shared illegally.. not some, but most of them! So, think twice before you download.
  2. - Seed after you download the file! be considerate!
  3. - There are countries who took action on illegal downloaders ( and also the uploaders )
  4. - Some files might contain viruses/trojans/malware etc. So be aware of that @ update your virus definition.
  5. - Leave comments on the page where you download the stuff/say thanks.
  6. - Some downloads might take you days, so be patient ( especially when your internet connection sucks! )
  7. - Most files are zipped. It is advisable to download extracting program first. I recommend winrar. Look for it in the web.
  8. - Some files are password protected. Look for the password, usually written on the file's description page.
  9. - Read comments from previous downloaders. It gives you an early insight on what you're downloading. You save a lot of time by doing this.
  10. - Avoid porn, please. hahaha. Seriously. A lot of viruses and malicious .exe are being attached to these kind of files .
How to start downloading?

- you need a torrent client. There are plenty torrent software out there, I used to use BITORRENT and BITCOMET. And of course, after you download, install it!

- Now you need to find the files that you're looking for. Example :- wallpaper of cars. Go to this sites , MININOVA.ORG or PIRATEBAY.ORG. Type "wallpaper of cars" at the search column, and hit search ( like you always do when googling )

- There will be plenty of results, so use your judgement to pick the best. Tips :- choose the one with more "seeders" in comparison to "leechers". See picture below ( in mininova ). The search bar is on the top of the page. There are 2 options, the first one has 0 seeder, so we can rule that out. the second option has 1 seeder. So pick that one. It's ok to have 0 leecher, but it's not ok to have 0 seeder.

- You'll be directed to the next page. ( see picture below )If you want to download the file, hit 1 ( not on your keyboard!! Hit the link on the page ). To read the comments, hit 2, and read the description on 3. Just be aware that, some of the description are false.

- Once you click "download the torrent", the download windows will pop up. Select "open with" and browse for the torrent client ( bitcomet or bittorent, which ever you've installed earlier )

- wait until the file finished downloading itself. hahahaha. Before you extract your file (once it's done ), scan for viruses and malwares.

Conclusion...

I personally don't use torrent, as the speed depends on the number of seeders and leechers. Besides, your IP/MAC address is being tracked down. I prefer rapidshare and megaupload, as the files are stored and seeded by their server, which is superfast and consistent transfer rate. And the downloads are anonymous. In the next few post, i'll write on those two. Chow!
